The reservoir was created by damming the Tuolomne River in the 1920's. The valley they elected to flood was -- according to the famous naturalist John Muir -- second only to Yosemite Valley in grandeur.
People still call upon the government to “Restore Hetch Hetchy”.
Even so, the setting is majestic, and it's cool to think about the pristine unfiltered water travelling 160 miles via gravity to quench the thirst of millions in the bay area.
