Felix started going to an "educational therapist" three weeks ago because, while he is clearly smart, curious, highly analytical, and the most mature four year old we know, we were concerned he wasn't making enough progress in reading and counting.
The results have been truly astounding. We didn't know what to expect. What the educational therapist has done is make Felix understand that words are composed of individual sounds, and has given him a framework for learning each sound.
This has unlocked something in Felix's head. He's suddenly exploding in all sorts of directions, such as:
- He can write his name with just a little assistance.
- He's really starting to understand rhyming, noticing it, and doing it himself.
- He's started to really understand the difference between French and English, and translating an English word into French when Lucie asks him.
- He's started counting from 1 to 10 without us pushing him. Before he was hesitating and afraid, but he found his confidence and gets it most of the time. He skips seven a lot.
- He's started drawing (a little). He's letting us correct his pencil grip, too.
- This week he saw a street sign and said (correctly), "Mom, that says 'Martin Luther King'. We have a book at school about him and it's written just like that."
These things have all happened in the last two weeks. Felix loves the sessions, loves succeeding. You can see it when talking to him. He's happier, more relaxed, more self-assured, not nearly as afraid to make mistakes.
